Announcements:

1.Please keep Jerry Dougherty in your prayers.

2.Our next social will be “An Evening at the Fort” at Larry Svihla’s house on August 15 starting at 6:00pm. There will be a live concert by the USAF band at 7:30pm. Bring your favorite bottle of wine, a covered dish and lawn chair. See Fred Kimsey to sign up.

3.Save the date! Our Change of Command dinner is September 28!

4.Carol Masser at Menchville House needs help weeding her garden and trimming bushes. Please contact Steve Yakshe, if interested.

5.The Poquoson Museum is having an appraisal fair on Aug. 3 at Masonic Hall, 6 Hunts Neck Rd. Proceeds will be used to restore Tom Hunt Store being relocated to the museum. See the flyer below.

6.The Poquoson Library summer hot dog lunch will be on August 21. We will need volunteers to help again this year. Contact Steve Yakshe.

7.See Graham Wilson if interested in purchasing a $100 KCCHR raffle ticket for a chance at winning $10,000.

8.It is time to kickoff this year’s Community Raffle for Eliminate! See Phil Tawney or George Hawes for tickets. The drawing will be held on the last day of the Poquoson Seafood Festival.

9.The Ducky Derby raffle has begun! See Hank Brodsky to sign up. The drawing will take place at the District Convention.

10.The Rhys T. Ritter Memorial Golf Outing is Monday, Aug. 12. See Charlie Baker if interested.

11.The RSVP Golf Tournament is Thursday, Oct. 3. See Paula Ogiba if interested.

12.The District Convention will be August 16-18 at the DoubleTree Convention Center in Williamsburg. The cost is $135 per member paid by the club. Register online at http://fs9.formsite.com/CapitalKiwanis/DCON2013/index.html by July 25 to avoid late fees.

13.The Salvation Army is collecting sorely needed school supplies by Aug. 19 for the upcoming school year. See the flyer below for details.

14.Virginia Peninsula Salvation Army Summer Camp Program, two (2) volunteers per day to assist from 12:00 NOON to between 1:30 PM
  and 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday from now until the middle of August, assist the counselors with feeding the children and helping to clean up afterwards. Email Jim_Colston@uss.salvationarmy.org and he will forward to Sarah Hatton, Director Children’s Programs.

15.Several Poquoson patrons (Brad Brauer, Guy Hewitt) together with City of Poquoson and the Poquoson Fire and Rescue Departments and Langley Federal Savings to sponsor a car show on August 25th from 10 to 5; the purpose is to collect $170,000 for the Poquoson Rescue Squad to purchase a new ambulance. Do you think Kiwanis would be interested in making this a community event project? The event needs volunteers, and you could do something in the moneymaking department as well. Jessy Spencer thanked us for sponsoring us at her conventions and shared some of her experiences and flair!

Steve Yakshe presented Jim Christol with his pin for achieving the 2011-2012 Distinguished Club status. Great job Jim and thanks to everyone for making that happen!

Johnny Byard was presented a Hixson for his great work with our club over the years. He and Betty are moving to Florida and will be sorely missed.


Speaker

Brian Chenault from the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization spoke on his organization and its process of planning and programming the region’s transportation projects.


Our next meeting (August 15) will be a business meeting.


Please bring a friend to one of our meetings or one of our service projects in order to share in the reward of giving back.

The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson Club Satellite provides a membership opportunity for those who wish to participate in our Poquoson club but whose schedules do not allow attendance at our normal Tuesday morning meetings.
